The Citrocado Smoothie

It's kind of insane that during the holidays we all pass around sparkly trays stacked high with calorie-laden festive treats. Then as soon as midnight strikes and a new year hits we're all in "detox" mode. We throw away our bag of semi sweet chocolate chips [or hide them if you're me] and bring out the bunches of kale. 

Our holiday wish list have now metamorphosed in to a wish list of healthy, new habits. But why wait for that clock to strike twelve? Why not start now? Why not help your body to help you get healthy. It all starts with baby steps and easing in to a pace you find fit for yourself. How about we all focus on one new healthy habit a day starting right now.

Let's start with green smoothies. Green smoothies are good sources of vitamins and minerals; and if you don't like eating your vegetables, you can join the growing masses who are drinking them instead. Having smoothies is a super great way to stay hydrated [because let's be real, those sodas, ciders, and bubbly didn't give us the holiday glow we were looking for].

This morning I whipped together a quick green smoothie that I like to call the citrocado smoothie: citruses + avocado. The key to green smoothies is to focus more on flavor and less on ingredients. Flavors are really aromatic and enjoyable when fewer greens, fruits, and vegetables are combined rather than having a laundry list of ingredients to add to your smoothie. 

P.S - if you don't already own a Vitamix, I highly suggest you add it to your wish list for 2014. 

Ingredients:

1-2 spears pineapple

1/2 cup kale

1/2 cup spinach

1 apple, chopped

1 avocado

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 cup coconut water, cold (regular water is fine too)

Pinch cilantro (optional)

Dash cayenne pepper (optional)

 

Directions:

1. Combine all of the ingredients in a blender, starting with liquid first, then leaves, then chunks of fruit

2. Blend until smooth, about a minute, or until desired consistency is reached
