4 Things You Should Never Say to a Pregnant Woman + Bumpdate

Pregnancy is nothing shy of a miracle that should be celebrated every day. The changes that a woman's body goes through are intense, both physically and emotionally. For me, with the changes, comes a surprise of being at a loss of control over my body. It’s tricky because I do believe most people mean well and are only trying to be friendly. However, certain statements and questions can easily shift into an awkward, unwarranted moment which can weigh heavily on an expecting mother's mind and/or heart. Here are four things to avoid saying to a pregnant woman (I speak for myself, from my own experience):

1. Were you trying? The whole “trying/not trying” thing is straight up personal information nobody else needs to be privy to. Whether one’s journey to pregnancy involves many years of waiting or an unexpected surprise — let the people having a baby take the lead on this one. Instead, offer sincere congratulations, and leave it at that.

2. You look tired. Carrying a baby for nine months is hard work and it takes up a lot of your energy. Chances are I probably am tired. But the last thing I want is to be reminded of how exhausted I am and how I look.

3. You don't look pregnant at all! I myself have been guilty of this one. While seeing a growing bump can be exciting, please know that commenting on the size or shape of a woman's body part is not helpful. It is actually a very sensitive subject. You may think you’re paying some type of compliment but you're likely only adding to the worries.

4. What if your body doesn't go back to normal? You’re right. What if it doesn't? My body may or may not be the same after childbirth. I kind of don't want to think about it at this point. I'd rather enjoy my days of being pregnant and allow my body to be reminded of the miracle that's within me.

If you have experienced pregnancy or if you've committed one of these offenses against a pregnant woman, I hope after this post we can nod heads, laugh out loud and learn a lesson or two along the way. Because as much as I like to complain about things like this, deep down I'm very thankful to be able to participate in this miracle of creating a life – and nothing can minimize that joy for me.

Baby Bumpdate

How I’m Feeling: My energy is at an all time high. BUT, if I don't get 7-8 hours of sleep every night, I will operate like a zombie all day.

Symptoms: I actually felt my baby's first kick!! It's funny because everyone would tell me what it would feel like (butterflies, flutters, muscle spasms, etc.) and I wasn't ever sure what I was looking for. But when you feel it, you feel it. For me, it felt kind of like a quick muscle twitch/quiver in the lower part of my belly. Nonetheless it is very exciting!

Cravings: Really into chocolate milk these days!

Exercise: I started doing prenatal yoga and I couldn't feel better! My body needed this push in becoming flexible and it's actually even helped me become more in tune with my core.

What I’ve Been Doing: Shopping for baby shower dresses! Though my showers are almost 1-2 months out, I'm particular about the looks I'm going for, so I'm getting a head start in browsing. If you have any tips or recommendations to where I can find some options (outside of ASOS and Nordstrom), please send them my way!

My Favorite Thing to Wear: Surprisingly, I have been wanting to wear maxis and dresses with tights a lot (like this and this). Layers on layers, and anything not gripping on my belly is my jam right now. I won't lie though, it definitely takes a creative toll to have to wake up every morning and figure out what to wear to work (that will also keep me warm!).

What I'm Doing for Myself: I'm trying to take care of my skin! My entire first trimester left me with nothing but acne scars and I'm finally into a good rhythm of things with a couple of new products I've been trying out. (Will probably do a separate skincare blog post - let me know if it's somethin you're interested in!)

Recent Purchases: I got my first pair of maternity jeans from Topshop and I reach for them almost every other day! I'm also probably going to invest in some compression socks (any reccos?) cause I'll be traveling quite a bit over the next few months.
